Mixing Grace and Law is the Spiritual Adultery.

JP on Married to Jesus_2

Jesus wants to love you, he came a long way from heaven leaving all the Glories of Heaven, to earth and in the likeness of man, He wooed us for 3.5 years in His miraculous ministry on earth, then through His death he redeemed us to become His brides at a costly price.

Rom 7:1-6 speaks about how we were first married to the Law.  There is nothing wrong with the Law, he is holy but he cannot make us holy, he is good but he cannot make us good, he is perfect and that lies the problem, because he is so perfect that he demands perfection from us that we cannot fully perform, and thus the Law has to curse us when we fail.  Married to Mr. Law resulting in Christians living in guilt-ridden, defeat and condemnation.

As we were stuck married to Mr. Law, the only way to be freed from him, is only that Mr. Law is dead.  And since the Law could not die, then consequently we are the one who had to die, in order to be freed from Mr. Law.  But Jesus wants us live, and thus, Jesus himself provided the death for us to free us from Mr. Law.

Rom 7:1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?
Rom 7:2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.
Rom 7:3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.
Rom 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Notice here was mentioned of being an adulteress if one was married to another while the other in the marriage, is not dead.  This also connotes that now since Jesus has provided the death for us and He had been resurrected, and we are now married to Jesus, and if we are to go back to the Law, will also means an adulteress.  How do we possibly go back to the Law while still married to Jesus ?

Rom 7:6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

The verse states that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit, and no longer in the old way of the Law.  Many Christians are still unwilling to do away or dump the Law completely.  They live in the mixture of Law and Grace.  Yes, I was saved by Grace but after I was saved I have to obey / follow the Law.  This is precisely it means by Spiritual adultery.  You are saved by Grace and you are to live by Grace too, whereby all you need to obey / follow the Lord in your life, be it the way to conduct your life, or day to day wisdom needed to live, how to deal with people, how to talk to your spouse, how to raise up your kids; yes, ALL knowledge & wisdom will be provided for and guided by the Holy Spirit who lives and resides inside you!  You don’t need the Law to guide you anymore, what you need is Grace (Jesus) who is now living in you (Holy Spirit).
Eg. when someone approach you with a proposal, do you feel at peace in making the decision? or is there something groaning inside you being not at peace? That is the Holy Spirit talking to you.  The Law could only tell you “don’t commit adultery” but it cannot tell you to love your wife. But Holy Spirit will do much more than the Law, He will tell you to hug & kiss your wife on your way out to work, or buy flower for anniversary. He will tell you to apologize when you said something not pleasing to her, etc.

So, today dump away Mr. Law completely from your mind, you don’t need the Law to guide you, and the more you are conscious of the Law, the more likely you will fall into sin, for the bible said so!  (1Co 15:56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.)   The Law is the one stirring your desire to sin some more.  Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

The Law aroused the sinful passions that are already in our flesh. Eg. a glass of still water looking clean but underneath having sediment with all impurities. We (spirit) have been saved but our flesh still carries propensity to sin.  The Law is a silver spoon which stirs up the sediment (sins). The spoon carries no impurities, but it only stirs up what is already there, the sediment of impurities (our sins in our flesh).  This is the purpose of the Law, to bring up sins and bring the end to ourselves, and makes us aware that we need a Savior!

What Jesus wants us to do is REST in Him by remaining in His love, as Jesus said, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love” (John 15:9).  Jesus did not ask you to do anything to have His love, nor for you to perform a task to earn His love; but for you to remain in His Love only, i.e. to know and believe that God the Father loved you as much as God the Father has loved Jesus. And, if you will remain in the quiet place of trust, resting in His love, believing in His Love for you, then your heart will be settled, at peace and will never worry nor be changed, no matter what come may; as you’re securely resting in His love.

If you don’t settle this in your heart – you may run-to-and-forth, from your present husband: Mr. Grace (Jesus) back to your former husband Mr. Law (Rom 7:1-6).  Eg. Having the self confidence to obey the Law, but when you failed, you cried out “oh Jesus, forgive me and I need your Grace right now”.  Someone who tries to mix law with grace is a spiritual adulterer. They’re cheating on Jesus. While they may appear to be religious on the outside, their hearts are full of unbelief.  The Gospel of Grace puts your full trust in Jesus as you Righteousness, while the Law puts trust in your own self to attain your own Righteousness.

After we are saved by His Grace, we should conduct our life by trusting in Him whose Spirit has resided in us, our daily walk with Him is a Rest. Even, when at times we fall into sin, just stand up & walk straight again with Him, knowing well that the sin we had just fallen, has been well forgiven and paid in full at the cross; so be at peace, for He is still walking with you. Till the end of your life on earth, either when you are Raptured or “sleep” to meet Him, it will still be His Grace that brings you home safely.  We are saved by Grace and Grace shall bring us home.

Do you see Jesus as mere Teacher ? or your Savior ?

There’re 2 figures in the Bible, where Holy Spirit put them side by side in John chapter 3 and 4. One is a learned Theologian and high political leader in Sanhedrin, Jews Counsel (the most prestigious during the time) named Nicodemus, who came to look for Jesus at night to avoid people. And, the other one is a sinner, a Samaria woman, who at the time Jesus met her, was still living in adultery with 5 men who were not her own husband. She came to the well to draw water in the mid hot sun noonday, also to avoid people (normally the women will draw water early in the morning).

One greatest revelation in this story was that it was the only time in the Bible, that Jesus ever revealed Himself as the “Messiah”. Jesus never before, not even to His own Disciples, revealed openly about His identity as THE MESSIAH; He once ask His disciples “But who do you say that I am?” and He let Simon Peter answered it.
Joh 4:25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
Joh 4:26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” (in Greek simply: “I AM” the word HE was added)
What is so special about this woman comparing to Nicodemus? Isn’t it better if Jesus were to tell Nicodemus “I am the Messiah”, instead?

Also, Nicodemus had to come personally to look for Jesus, while Jesus personally came to see the woman, by diverting His journey to Samaria, Jesus sought her on purpose: The journey to Galilee through Samaria is way off different route.
Joh 4:3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee.
Joh 4:4 But He NEEDED to go through Samaria.
Jesus needed to see a sinner to save her.

Nicodemus started the conversation with “”Rabbi, we KNOW that You are a TEACHER ….”(Joh 3:2). A person who think they know a lot, would normally say “I KNOW…” first, to show off what they know. And, secondly, Nicodemus came to see Jesus as a TEACHER. Jesus came primarily to be our SAVIOR not just a teacher. As long as you see Him merely as a teacher (something to learn from), then it can be pride-related / self-righteous: “just teach me Your PRINCIPLES of success, and I CAN DO it myself”. Do you look at Jesus as your savior? or do you just want to learn His PRINCIPLES of Grace? I heard many preaching about Grace, and yet many were DRY principles MERELY principles, there is no LIFE giving force of LOVE. Jesus wants us to feed on Him, He called Himself the bread of life, and the Living water, so eat Him and drink Him, until you are full of Him.  A Savior does not just save us from Hell, but we can depend on Him to save us from every aspect of life, like our finances, health, family, marriage, etc. even save us from our self.

With the woman, it was Jesus who started the conversation first by asking her for a drink. What a humility of the Son of God who in Himself already had a fountain of Living water springing up into everlasting life, yet asking for a water to drink from a sinner. Later, in the conversation, Jesus never rebuked her, when she lied about “I have no husband”, and Jesus even praise her (in Greek) “you have BEAUTIFULLY said it you have no husband..” Then again He divine-sandwich her with another compliment for a little honesty: “…in that you have HONESTLY said…”. Although Jesus exposed her but not to condemn her, but for her to know who she was talking to (a Messiah) who knew everything about her and yet still Loved her. Because, the test of true Love is to know everything about you but still love you.

While with Nicodemus, Jesus rebuked him without any ‘sandwich-butter’, “Are you THE TEACHER of ISRAEL, and yet DO NOT KNOW these things?” ; “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be BORN AGAIN!”. Which are quite sarcastic and direct.
After spending time with Jesus, she became an INSTANT EVANGELIST to her village, earlier she was avoiding people by drawing water in the mid of hot day, and now she could boldly face the whole village crowds and loudly said “come see a man who knows everything about MYSELF….” She was delivered from SELF-consciousness to be Jesus consciousness. Likewise, Jesus was invigorated & refreshed after being “drawn” by the woman, because when the disciples came back with food to give Him, he said: “I have food to eat that you do not know of”; as if Jesus had just eaten & rested well , all because a sinner had come and TAKEN from the Savior.

There was a time, when I had to prepare 3 sermons, 3 days in a row, it was quite a stressful Grace Conference.  The best sermon which touched many, was born out of my total hopelessness, no self confidence and yet I felt Loved by my Savior Jesus (just like the woman at the well).  I was so stressed up in the last minute sermon preparation, and so I just threw myself to relax and listened to worship songs, and when the song “WORTHY IS THE LAMB” that I have heard so many times before, but this time was different when I heard a lyric word of “DARLING of HEAVEN”, a revelation of Jesus being the darling of heaven, loved by God & Angels, the night in Bethlehem, He came to earth being ESCORTED by millions of Angels, so dearly they said among each other “will the people of the world love HIM like we do?”. And I started to cry, remembering THE DARLING OF HEAVEN, who came to look for me and died a horrifying death to redeem me. And, that became the topic of my sermon that captured the heart of many. A simple story, but never grew old.

Beloved, if you want Jesus to reveal Himself like he did to the woman, plain open and direct, then COME to Him without your smartness, no self confidence, and just enjoying His love & presence and He will reveal to you mighty things you were once so desperately sought.

Nicodemus n the woman at the well

God called it FAITH when you look to Jesus. FAITH is not for you to look at, but for God to look at. Faith is not for you to decide, BUT it is for God to decide. You part is just to look at Jesus. When you see Jesus in His Glory, in His goodness, in His Love, in His Power, or His Grace; then God will see you in your FAITH.

The woman with the issue of blood for 12 years, (Luk 8:43)…, who had spent all her money and livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any.  She heard of Jesus and His miraculous power to heal, and this person Jesus was going to pass by her town on that day.  She was so excited and prepared her way to meet this person called Jesus.  People already crowded around the street where Jesus would pass by.  So, she followed the crowd and pushed her way through the crowd.

During that time, the Law prohibited a woman with blood issue (menstrual blood) to be in the public. She was considered unclean, and could not go out of her house and to be in public, for she could “contaminate” others with her uncleanness (that was how cruel the Law can be). But this woman who had purposely defied the Law, because of her wanting to be healed, believe in the GREATNESS and HEALING POWER of Jesus, believing that only by touching the garments of Jesus, she will be healed!

Mat 9:20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment.
Mat 9:21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.”
Mat 9:22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.

This woman was not looking at her condition or her situation anymore, she was not even supposed to be in the public in the first place, and yet she did not consider all those things anymore.  She was not looking at the medical science logic either, because medical science had failed to heal her for 12 long years; her mind was only to look to Jesus for “Jesus can heal me”, and she believed merely by the touch of His garment alone, she can be healed.  She saw Jesus in His Glory, and Jesus turned around and said to her “Your faith has made you well”, Jesus saw her Faith, when she saw Jesus’ greatness, goodness, love and power. Jesus credited this to her faith. Jesus saw her Faith when she saw Jesus’ Grace.  So, Look to Jesus, and your Faith will spring up effortlessly, and God see your Faith!
Faith is to look to Jesus for everything.  Jesus alone saves, Jesus alone heals, Jesus alone supplies, and when you believe this, God called it Faith!  Why?  Because : Jesus is the only way to all God’s blessings, Jesus alone is the bridge.  (Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me).

The children of Israel when they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, went around the land of Edom; and fiery serpents bit them, and many of the people of Israel died. How did they receive healing?

Num 21:8 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”
Num 21:9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Bronze serpent on a pole, is the picture of Jesus Christ on the cross being judged for all our sins and curses of sins. When we look at the cross for His finished work, our diseases died and we live.  Because on that cross Jesus had taken all your diseases upon His own body (Isa 53:5 and 1Pet 2:24).

You cannot remain the same once you look to Jesus, something will happen inside you, although you may not feel anything yet instantaneously.
When Jesus cursed the fig tree (Mar 11:14), the tree is still looking the same, green. But, the next day only the tree turned brown, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots and had withered away (Mar 11:21). Something had happened to the root of the fig tree (likewise: your diseases, or other problems in life) when you cursed it in Jesus’s name, the root of the disease had dried up, and you will see the good result soon, maybe the next day!

Furthermore, Jesus never promised to supply us according to the smallness of our faith, but He promised us that In Him we have redemption through His blood, according to the RICHES of His GRACE, (Eph 1:7). And How Rich is His Grace? Immeasurable! The universe is the Limit of God’s Grace, Unlimited, it was our mind that limits God. God’s blessings on you is bigger than your legs can carry, God can take you and put you at the finishing line immediately.  So, raise up your hope, aim for the sun and you reach the moon; aim for nothing and you reach nothing.
