Joseph was a successful Prisoner

By this time, from being a slave, Joseph has been promoted to be the chief Butler in the house of Mr. Potiphar, who was an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian rich household. But, we all know from the Bible that his ultimate position would be as the Governor of Egypt, the second most powerful man in Egypt, after the Pharaoh himself. This was what God had in store for him. And, It is interesting to know how Joseph went there from where he was now.

Walking with God made Joseph walk in Favor with man, and as such, His master was so pleased with him that he entrusted everything he owns (except for his wife of course) into the hands of Joseph. And, having God’s favor also changed Joseph’s physical appearance which had also become handsome too. When you have God’s favor on you, somehow you will become attractive to others who will see you very special. (Gen 39:1-6)

Gen 39:7  and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.
Gen 39:8  But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.
Gen 39:9  No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”

Joseph lived about 300 years before the 10th Commandments were given, in his mind there was no written Laws to remember. But in his heart, the Law of Love was well written by God’s Spirit, thus Joseph knew by the Spirit that sleeping with another man’s wife is A GREAT WICKEDNESS and SIN AGAINST GOD!  Joseph lived in the same era where we are living today, the Era of God’s Grace, where the rule that guides our life is the rule of Love written in our heart by the Holy Spirit of God. We do not need the written codes of Law to tell us what is right and wrong, we know by the spirit what is right and permissible and what is wrong and not beneficial to us.

He rejected Potiphar’s wife invitation of seduction; even though no one would ever know of the affair should Joseph carry on playing the seduction game with her. In fact, most likely Joseph would have benefited materialistically by gaining her good favor, should Joseph have played the game with her. But, Joseph feared only God, what can man do when God is on his side? This is bible promise!

Gen 39:10  She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.
Gen 39:11  One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work.
Gen 39:12  She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.

Using his cloak as the false evidence, she slandered Joseph of trying to rape her in her bedroom, as she defended her chastity and screamed, he ran off leaving behind his cloak. What a lie!. And, her husband was so furious with Joseph that he threw him into the high profile prison where only the King’s prisoners were held. (Gen 39:13-20)

But again the Bible said that God’s favor was with Joseph:

Gen 39:21  But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him His faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.
Gen 39:22  Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.
Gen 39:23  The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.

God never planned for bad situations to happen to His children. Devils did. But God can always turn a bad situation around that all things, good or bad will work together for the good of His children. If the devils throw a sour lemon, God can turn it into refreshing lemonade.

The prison was never a bad place for Joseph to pass his days. The prison warden favored him and put him in charge as the second in command after him, because the bible said he was in charge of all other prisoners as well as over every administrative and operational matters of the prison. The bible said Joseph was a successful Prisoner!

Putting Joseph in the high profile prison is the link way for Joseph to meet the King. Because there he met 2 of the King’s men: Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer and chief baker. They both had offended the King and thus be put in the prison. Because of God’s favor, again Joseph was made able to interpret the dreams of both who turned out to be true, and this made Joseph’s  name known to the Pharaoh when the Pharaoh needed someone to interpret his own dream.
